Unsuspecting students from Matthew McConaughey’s alma mater got a ride home on Monday night from the famous alumnus, who was helping with the SURE Walk program. SURE Walk (Students United for Rape Elimination) operates at the University of Texas at Austin offering walking partners and golf cart rides for students requiring assistance returning home.

The actor volunteered to drive one of the program’s golf carts loaded with students headed home for the evening, as one of his many UT support activities. Most recently seen on the sidelines when the university ended its football season with a loss to Texas Christian University, McConaughey not only supports his school (having graduated in ’93 with a bachelor’s degree in Radio-Television-Film) but also his state – the state of Texas. The latest example of his affinity for human kindness was volunteering to deliver to those in need on Thanksgiving through the Meals on Wheels program, something which his entire family pitched in on, and have been doing so for decades.

So it wasn’t a stretch for the Oscar-winning actor to once again give back by getting behind the wheel of a SURE Walk golf cart on Monday to help out. And the program can benefit from this generosity in many ways. Not only does McConaughey lending a hand help speak to others in the community that can do the same, but it also draws attention to the service which need not be underused. In an article posted by TexasHillCountry.com on November 29, the SURE Walk program was identified as a safety measure that is there for student use at a time when Austin police are warning about the uptick in personal crime in the city.

Taking to their Facebook page, the UT Student Government was able to recognize McConaughey’s efforts and bring more light to the SURE Walk service for their student body, posting, “Longhorns take care of each other, and it’s ”safe” to say Matthew McConaughey agrees. Don’t forget to use SURE Walk when traveling home late at night; you never know who might pick you up!” McConaughey extended the effort further by providing a special campus safety message by video for the student body, which was posted on the same page and can be viewed here.
