Marfa, Texas, may be known for its strange lights that shine in the sky over west Texas, but it’s also become a mecca for filmmakers to debut a mix of features, shorts, music videos, and experimental works during their annual Marfa Film Festival.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the festival is shining a spotlight on women during its showcase of impressive works from July 11-15th. “While the festival will show films from all genders, MFF is dedicated to creating programming and experiences that further the empowerment of females in creative industries,” stated its website.

Just as unique as this town is, so too is the film festival which debuts its movies among the backdrop of the desert landscape. Festival attendees delight in the vibrant atmosphere of the Texas city that’s far off the beaten path, taking in the stark yet beautiful scenery and breathing the clear, clean desert air.

The films are showcased one-at-a-time, giving the audience plenty of time to relax afterward.

The talented works featured at MFF have gone on to receive some of the highest recognition through Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys. It’s the perfect setting for up and coming filmmakers to debut their talented works. This mecca for world premieres just might showcase the movie that could quite possibly be the next big film everyone will be talking about for years.

Filmmakers, international press, industry professionals, and attendees from around the globe descend upon this desert town for a jam-packed “mix of features, shorts, music videos, and experimental works,” rounded out each evening by a classic film screened against the “starlit desert” for your viewing pleasure.

On Friday the 13th there will be a Frida Kahlo picnic party on the Marfa Golf Course in honor of her July birthday, followed by a special outdoor screening under the stars of “Like Water for Chocolate.”

With an impressive line-up of films, this year’s festival is sure to take your breath away with its collection of various genres from around the world. “In previous years, the festival has featured the likes of Dennis Hopper, Larry McMurtry, and Heath Ledger,” shared texashighways.com.  For the complete schedule and more information about passes visit their website at www.marfafilmfestival.com.
