Tejano superstar Emilio Navaira also referred to as the “King of Tejano” music is set to receive Fiesta San Antonio’s inaugural celebrity medal. The Fiesta San Antonio Commission was proud to announce their first “Official” celebrity medal after 126 years of Fiesta San Antonio to honor the late Tejano star and San Antonio native.

Navaira passed away at the age of 53 on May 16, 2016, after reports of a massive heart attack according to Wikipedia.  According to an interview with KENS 5, Amy Shaw, the executive director of the Fiesta San Antonio Commission had this to share,”I think on the whole, though, he was very highly respected, really around the world, certainly in North America. This is about celebration, celebrating his talent and his love for this community.”

With mixed reviews and opinions by some on social media as to whether Navaira was the best choice, it’s his contributions to the Tejano music scene and his San Antonio community that is the focus. “Shaw hopes people remember all the good Emilio did, not his most publicized mistake,” as she shared in her interview with KEN 5. In 2008 the Grammy award-winning artist was involved in a tour bus crash where he nearly lost his life and Police statements issued he was driving drunk.
