Frida Fest in San Antonio: Celebrating the Legacy of Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo is a legendary Mexican painter whose legacy has stood the test of time, and inspired generations of admiring fans. One of Latin America’s most beloved and talented artist of the 20th century. Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was born on July 6, 1907, in Coyoacán, Mexico City, Mexico

To commemorate her 110th birthday, celebrations have been held throughout this year in Texas cities and beyond. Each festival pays homage to her creativity and unique style she so delicately portrayed in each of her self-portrait paintings. On July 15, 2017, the Wonderland of the Americas in San Antonio, TX will continue the celebration with its second annual Frida Fest.

Frida Fest 2017 at the Wonderland of the America’s follows celebrations already held in Dallas, TX earlier in July. Participants of the Frida Fest in Dallas had the chance to participate in setting a Guinness World Record event for the largest gathering of people dressed as Frida Kahlo. In Houston, TX, a 12th annual Frida Festival was held in April celebrating what has become a time-honored tradition for residents there.

In this year’s San Antonio festival, “Que Retro Arts and Viva Vegeria will host ‘A view of our own reality.'” You can expect to find a one of a kind art gallery, a handmade Mercado, fashion, music, performances, & culinary traditions according to do210.com/events.

Kahlo is known for her mesmerizing self-portraits each portraying symbolic truths and pain seen throughout each painting. She drew inspiration also from Mexican folk culture, and “her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy,” according to Wikipedia. Recently, a rediscovered 1929 painting of Kahlo’s titled “Niña con collar’’ or ‘‘Girl with necklace” was auctioned as part of Sotheby’s Latin America: Modern Art sale on November 22, 2016, according to an article by the bostonglobe.com. “The pre-sale estimate was $1.5 million to $2 million.”
