Get Your Enchilada Fix at Boerne’s Don Ruben El Tejano!

By  |

If you are a Hill Country transplant from South Texas, finding good enchiladas may be one critical to-do item for you. One recommended stop is in Boerne. Don Ruben El Tejano is located at the edge of town on 1000 N. Main St. This Tex-Mex restaurant features brightly colored walls, friendly staff, and beautiful brown gravy enchiladas. Lunch specials are posted daily, and the full menu is available all day. Catering is also an option from Don Ruben’s. Parking here is plentiful, but watch out for some dipping asphalt in a few places!

Operating hours are Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sunday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. A side room with one large table provides seating for groups, just call ahead for open times. Tables are also moveable to accommodate some larger groups. Weekends during the late morning and early afternoon times are quite busy, but To Go ordering can also be completed at the payment counter or the single window drive-thru. Popular menu items include caldo and carne guisada. Red and green salsa both come with your meal or with chips in the afternoons.

Many regulars grace the doors of this unassuming restaurant. Visit often enough and your order might just be remembered without the aid of menus! Don Ruben El Tejano was previously known as Yoli’s, and the owners are the same, as well as the cooks. The name change is in honor of the family’s patriarch, Ruben Antu, who passed away a few years ago. Many family members work here too, and sometimes Ruben’s wife, Susie, can be seen there, just to keep an eye on things. Support a local small town business by giving Don Ruben’s a try for your brown gravy, yellow cheese enchilada fix, and you won’t be disappointed.
