Everyone knows and loves the Riverwalk in San Antonio, but have you heard of the San Pedro Creek Improvements Project? According to the project’s website, the four-phase plan will “…transform San Pedro Creek from a concrete-lined drainage ditch into a natural creek habitat and world-class linear park.” The improvement area runs for 2.2 miles from north to south parallel to the San Antonio River in Central San Antonio. MySA.com reports that the Commissioners Court approved $19.8 million on Tuesday, December 19, specifically for the section that will run three blocks downtown from Houston Street to Nueva Street.

“The bulk of the funding approved Tuesday, about $12.9 million, will go toward civil and utility work along the next creek segment, including wall stabilization and building underpinnings. A smaller chunk, totaling about $4.2 million, will pay for the demolition of an already-closed Dollar General store on Commerce Street and various electric and gas utilities,” MySA.com explains.

There’s also talk of raising additional funding to place a huge sculpture depicting a woman’s face that could be seen from I-35 in the San Pedro Creek plaza. The aluminum sculpture would tower six stories in height!
