In 2016, the Houston Zoo hit a milestone with over 2.55 million folks coming through their gates to visit the zoo. In a recent article shared by ABC 13 KTRK, that number made the Houston Zoo the top attraction in Houston, Texas and the second most visited zoo in the country behind the San Diego Zoo.

We already know Texas does everything “bigger and better” so of course, this comes as no surprise. With over 6,000 permanent animals, the zoo is made up of many moving parts that come together to create a magical kingdom of sorts and opportunities to not only interact with some of the animals, but enjoy grand and signature events like the holiday favorite Zoo Lights.

The Houston Zoo is an exemplary example of not only providing enjoyable experiences with the animals but providing educational opportunities to learn more about the care that goes on behind the scenes. Their vision is “The Houston Zoo will be a leader in the global movement to save wildlife,” as stated on their website. By partnering with other programs and organizations that share their passion they are able to strengthen this impact. “We support long-term solutions that promote harmony between animals and people,” states its website.

With so many things to encounter, no visit is the same to the Houston Zoo. You can choose from a variety of activities to participate in, such as Animal Encounters like feeding the giraffes. Enjoy a morning walk with the zoo keeper and a cheetah, and learn what the zoo is doing to protect cheetahs in the wild. You can also get up close and personal with one of the Asian elephants and snap a photo to share. For dates, times, and prices visit their website at www.houstonzoo.org.

There’s plenty to see and do for the whole family. Don’t forget the beautiful carousel and petting zoo for the kids. Want to see live action of what the gorillas, zebras, elephants, or flamingos might be doing? Go to their webcam here to enjoy live action.
