In receipt of 137 animals within the past week, the Humane Society of Central Texas (HSCT) is in desperate need of families willing and able to adopt dogs that will otherwise be euthanized. Due to the fact that resources are already overtaxed, the HSCT can’t care for the high number of dogs they have received in comparison to the average of 10-20 per day.

The HSCT Associate Executive Director, April Plemons, has identified that the shelter employees have seen higher intake numbers combined with fewer owners laying claim to their lost pets. This, together with lower numbers of families adopting animals and two recent pet seizures have intensified the issue.

In an interview with KCEN-TV, Plemons stated, “Normally, we say if you can come in and adopt it would be great. Today, we are saying if you can’t come in and adopt, animals will be euthanized.” To expedite adoptions, the shelter had offered this service for free on Tuesday, May 23, and will continue to encourage pet fostering in the interim for those that can’t presently adopt. Every effort to find homes for these animals is presently being employed.
