K-9 officers in Williamson County (north of Austin here in Texas) will appear even more professional after they acquire the appropriate gear to excel at their duties. KVUE writes that Sheriff Robert Chody tweeted out a request for either grants or donations to provide the county’s seven K-9 officers with bulletproof vests. By the next morning, he was able to happily tweet that the request had immediately resulted in success thanks to Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

According to their website, Vested Interest in K9s was founded by Sandy Marcal who has worked for 16 years to provide these working dogs with “bullet and stab protective” vests that can save these animals’ lives. She also began a healthcare program for K9s that “…offers a pre-paid medical insurance grant for self-funded K9 units.”

The special armored vests come in six different camouflage colors and are made to fit the dogs perfectly and comfortably so they can still perform their duties. The price of each vest can reach a total of $2,234, but the nonprofit has worked out a deal with the manufacturer so that each vest can be purchased for $950 through donations.
