In the great Texas tradition of everything being bigger in this great state of ours, the Katy Independent School District unveiled the largest, most expensive high school stadium in American history on Thursday, in an equally large and extravagant ceremony.

The dedication ceremony held outside of Houston on August 17, unveiling Legacy Stadium, focused on the many future events that will be held there, including extracurricular activities, fine arts events, and many other district functions.

With the cost of construction on the facility topping out at $70.3 million, it’s considered the most expensive high school stadium in the U.S. Officials of the school district have identified that the stadium will be able to hold a crowd of 77,000.

Area voters approved the construction in 2014, as reported by KPRC, with an original cost estimate of $58 million. Due to unexpected construction costs, district officials noted that this price jumped to $70 million. Just a few hours north of Legacy is the site of McKinney ISD’s new stadium, which is presently anticipated to come in at $69.9 million upon opening in 2018.
