“It’s a really awesome chance. If you don’t win, at least you get to learn stuff from it,” 12-year-old Teresa So told the Express-News. She was the winner of the 2016 Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Treasures of the Texas Coast Children’s Art Contest, and her prize was certainly worthwhile.

So drew a colorful ode to a sea turtle which earned her and her teacher (Karen Germany at Walker Station Elementary) two free round-trip tickets from United Airlines to any state (except Hawaii) or Canada or Mexico along with a seven-night cruise to the Caribbean courtesy of Royal Caribbean International. To top it all off, she even won a party for her entire class at the New Braunfels Schlitterbahn Waterpark.

The 2017 contest is already open! According to the Adopt-A-Beach website, “Ten winners will be chosen in mid-April from each of four grade-level categories (K – 2nd, 3rd – 4th, 5th, and 6th) for a total of 40 winners. One grand prize winner will be chosen from among the 40 finalists.” Details on which mediums are acceptable and how to enter are detailed on the webpage.

The deadline is March 1st, so if you know a child who wants to participate, encourage them to find inspiration from the sea soon.
