From Houston, it’s about 100 miles and only 62 miles from Austin on Texas State Highway 71. For those who wish to retire, the proximity to Austin and Houston provide big city amenities while you enjoy small town life. Surround yourself with people you know, and experience a quieter, slower way of life. The big cities are there when you need them.  If you’re looking for an escape, La Grange is an excellent choice.

The Colorado River meanders in and around the city and adds to the scenic beauty of the area.  So do the rolling hills. La Grange began as Moore’s Fort, named after John Henry Moore. Moore was one of the original Three Hundred in 1821 to receive land grants by way of Stephen F. Austin. Moore built a blockhouse to provide shelter from Indian attacks for local settlers. Later, the Republic of Texas established Fayette County in 1837, and La Grange was chosen as the country seat. The Germans and Czechs began to arrive in the 1840s, and their influence is felt today through music, food, and an annual county fair in September.

The population hovers near 5,000, and the downtown area features historic structures – some dating back as far as the 1800s. There’s always something fun happening in La Grange. Don’t miss the Czech Music and Culture event in October or the Trail of Lights in December. When February 2018 rolls around, attend the quilt show. Attend the wine and food fest in March. If you miss it, there’s another in May. Enjoy movie nights on the square in June and July. The stores around the courthouse square provide an interesting assortment of wares. Among the specialties, you’ll find homemade treats and jewelry designed on premises. If you like museums, try the Texas Heroes Museum.

This antiquated building was the Old Jail. You’ll find it right off the Courthouse square. They’re open on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The building itself is a study in architecture. Are you hungry?
