Lawmaker Wants to Put an End to Daylight Saving Time

“I think it’s ridiculous,” the Star-Telegram quotes state Rep. Dan Flynn. “I see no reason to have it…It’s just one of those things…Most of the senior people were really upset about it. They bought new cars and didn’t know how to change their clocks.”

Flynn wants to close the blinds on Daylight Saving Time in Texas. If other lawmakers agree, Texans would not observe Daylight Saving Time next year.

Flynn has attempted to get a bill through concerning this matter previously, but it fell through. ABC 13 writes, “Similar measures have been considered in other states, though little saw success. Hawaii and most of Arizona currently are the only states that don’t observe the practice.”

Those who oppose Daylight Saving Time say that it’s an outdated idea and would be helpful to children in the mornings and even to electric companies “that update systems to account for the time change potentially avoid erroneously over-billing customers,” explains the Star-Telegram.

But many Texans also enjoy Daylight Saving Time because it gives us an extra hour of light in the evening hours. It’s also argued that more energy will be used if the time stays the same throughout the year, which could lead to blackouts and harm to the environment.

This year, Daylight Saving Time begins on March 12th (when we “spring forward” an hour) and runs through November 5th (when we “fall back”).
