“They are in demand. Everybody loves avocados,” Sgt. John Franchi of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office told the Los Angeles Times. Since more and more Americans are nodding “yes” when asked if they want to add avocado to their meal, the delicious and nutritious produce is highly sought after. Perhaps that’s why three men were recently caught stealing and reselling avocados, and it wasn’t any measly amount. The men are charged with stealing about $300,000 worth of the green produce!

The men were selling boxes of avocados worth $50 for $20 – $30 out of the back door of their place of employment, Mission Produce. Though the company changed their policy from selling out of their distribution center to deliveries, some buyers still mistakenly turned up at the center. The workers decided to go ahead and sell the avocados to the buyers and pocket the money. Their plan had been working for several months, during which they swindled a large amount of dough (or in this cause, guacamole).

According to Fox News, the three men were arrested last week after their boss discovered what they were doing through surveillance footage. Their bails are set at $250,000 each. Mission Produce’s losses were taken care of through their insurance.
