Truthfully, nothing really beats Grandma’s cooking or baking in general, not to mention this amazing chocolate pie. But, there’s just something about a rich, chocolate pie that satisfies the deepest need for “comfort food”…and Grandma knows best! Take it from us, you’ll want seconds and thirds of this decadent dessert. Don’t forget the whipped cream!

Grandma's Chocolate Pie

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/4 cup corn starch
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1-1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 refrigerated pie shell, cooked

INSTRUCTIONS:

Combine everything except the cornstarch and vanilla. Heat until very hot. Combine the cornstarch with equal amounts of milk. (1/4 cup). Mix together.

Once the mixture is hot, slowly pour in the cornstarch mixture and whisk as you pour. You don’t have to use a double boiler as long as you continually stir it. It will thicken. Use medium heat, not high. Once it is the consistency of thick pudding, turn off the heat.

Stir in the vanilla. (You NEVER cook vanilla.) It is added after you turn off the heat.

Pour mixture into pre-cooked pie shell. Chill. Once chilled, add whipped cream stars and chocolate shavings or cinnamon for an added touch. Chill until ready to eat. Enjoy.
