Over 4,000 pounds of beef stew product sold at H-E-B stores in Texas has been recalled as a result of possible metal and plastic contamination. The Class I recall was announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) in reference to Swift Beef Co. on Tuesday, December 26 via a press release. A Class I recall indicates that there is a reasonable likelihood that the product could cause serious ailment or death. Referring specifically to metal and plastic, the press release identifies that the beef stew product could possibly be contaminated with foreign matter.

According to the FSIS, the following products are subject to this recall:

  • Cases which contain six 5-lb. bulk cryovac plastic bags having beef stew meat intended for H-E-B grocery store retailer re-packaging. This case code is 69404.
  • Re-packaged (various weight) beef stew meat trays containing vegetables which are wrapped separately. The number 7231 is marked on the side of the meat trays.
  • Re-packaged (various weight) beef stew which is labeled as H-E-B brand: Beef Stew Meat-CR VP, Beef Stew Meat Tenderized RP, Beef Stew Meat RP, Beef Stew Meat VP, Beef Stew Meat Tenderized VP, Beef Stew Kit, and Beef Stew Meat CP.

These boneless beef stew items have a production date of December 13, 2017. H-E-B locked the sales of all stew meat out of their registers as a result of the need for the product recall which was discovered on Christmas Eve by a San Antonio H-E-B store. All of these products have since been pulled from the shelves of all their stores. At present, there are no confirmed reports of illness due to consumption, however, those that are concerned about an illness or injury as a result of consumption should get in touch with a healthcare provider. Those with questions regarding the recall can contact the Head of Corporate Affairs for H-E-B, Cameron Bruett, at (970) 506-7801. For the full recall release, please click on this link.
