Defined by the two large cliffs standing as gates to the entry of a cove on the southern end of Possum Kingdom Lake, the 2018 season of Red Bull Cliff Diving will kick off with a return to Hell’s Gate, here in Texas, marking its 10th season of high-flying, adrenalin-charged sportsmanship. The season opener in the Lone Star State guarantees to once again premiere the showcase of excellence that series champions such as Jonathan Paredes displayed with his winning dive in the same locale back in 2016.

Texas kicks off the seven-stop program for 2018, and Hell’s Gate also marks the start of the fifth year for the Women’s World Series event as well. The huge reservoir at Possum Kingdom Lake, created through the damming of the Brazos River, has not only incredibly deep water but enormous, sheer cliffs from which these dives are made possible. The image of the towering cliffs at Hell’s Gate is only just overshadowed by the various complex maneuvers that the divers achieve. The heights from which they dive are close to three times that which Olympic divers perform.

With this fifth return to the state of Texas, the location at Possum Kingdom Lake now enters the hall of fame for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series’ all-time favorite locales. Over the course of the past nine years, only three other locations have hosted more stops, including the Azores in Portugal; La Rochelle in France, and Polignano a Mare, Italy. Texas is in good company!
