Holding a variety of events unique to their character, having neighborhoods that speak of one-of-a-kind experiences, and burgeoning culinary scenes you may just be reading about in upcoming issues of Food & Wine magazine, TripAdvisor has compiled a listing of the top small cities to visit in 2018, and San Marcos has made the list.

Featuring 23 cities in total, the list highlights those that offer the zest you’d expect from vacationing in a city, but not the hefty price tag. And, some of these cities are in the midst of regeneration, which means you’re catching them on the cusp of new and exciting projects. The “23 Great American Small Cities to Visit in 2018” list also holds a range of accommodations through TripAdvisor which are easy to book and will secure you and your family a comfortable living space for the duration of your stay. Some with full kitchens, private outdoor spaces, and amenities such as laundry facilities, these locations allow the comforts of home at prices that vie for your vacation dollar. They’re also central to the cities you wish to visit on the list.

Cities and towns in Texas are no stranger to making a variety of listings for great vacation sites, tours, and attractions, but San Marcos, in the Texas Hill Country, is truly the best of both worlds. It’s developed enough that it features many great urban options for travelers, but it’s also considerably close enough to larger centers such as San Antonio and Austin. It’s valued by avid runners for the design and selection of trails, not to mention those that love the great outdoors for water sports, in particular. The San Marcos River provides the perfect backdrop for paddle-boarding, kayaking, tubing, or simply floating down the river and relaxing. The city also boasts outlet shopping, fantastic food, and excellent festival-goer opportunities.
