As ice and snow continued to make its way across the country, increasing numbers of students (and perhaps even some parents) were studiously watching news reports, hoping for the announcement of a “snow day”. But for some in Atlanta, it was an opportunity to follow the Cherokee County School District’s Twitter account for updates, post a couple requests (you know, a couple nudges) and see if they could work something out. When the kids took to Twitter to post their “snow day” requests, the school district responded in fine form!

“Just 2 be safe go ahead and cancel school tmmrw,” said one tweet. “Just 2 be safe, do your homework,” was the school district’s response! And they only got better. With various other districts in the area having already closed, some students even continued to “endear” themselves to the Cherokee County School District’s Twitter account, expressing their concerns (naturally…)

The interest in a “snow day” was so high, students went as far as creating fake district Twitter accounts tweeting false closings. Finally, it seemed, success was achieved when the district canceled classes on January 10, for one day. In the meantime, whoever was behind the Cherokee County School District’s Twitter responses garnered a lot more attention than the mandatory homework list did.
