Sea Turtle, Inc’s (STI) new education facility is set to make its grand opening in February of 2018 and continues to make great strides in its mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured sea turtles.

Founded in 1977 by Ila Fox Loetscher, better known as “The Turtle Lady of South Padre Island,” according to its website, STI was originally founded to protect the endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle and was run out of Ila’s backyard until it moved to its current location at 6617 Padre Blvd., South Padre Island, TX.

Sea Turtle, Inc is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Its mission has expanded to the following three main categories according to its website:

• Rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured sea turtles
• Educate the public
• Assist with conservation efforts for all sea turtle species

They also schedule various turtle release events throughout the year that is open to the public. Throughout the year they also hold annual fundraisers, a Sea Turtle Inc. beach clean-up, a community day, and even a Turtle Ball.

The new facility will provide more spacious tanks for the turtles to lounge in as they recover, and visitors can watch as they spread their flippers. There will be activities for guest to get up-close-and-personal in the new bubble tank and more educational programs to highlight the impact humans have on the ocean life.
