Sky Pool in Houston is a Jaw-Dropping Glass-Bottomed Swim High Above the City

Opening in October 2016 to residents of a luxury apartment complex in Houston, the “sky pool,” as it’s called, makes going for a swim on a rooftop not only fun but a little bit terrifying! This cantilevered, glass-bottom infinity pool at the Market Square Tower shows that not only is everything bigger in Texas…it’s also braver!

The pool is situated on the building’s roof, with a section that juts out over the edge, having a glass bottom. When people wade out into that section, they’re effectively walking high above the city with a view down to the street below. It appears to be both exhilarating and somewhat petrifying at the same time! Located on the 42nd floor, it’s a wonderful spot to cool off, but not if you have a healthy fear of heights! In an interview with Paper City, building developer Philip Schneidau noted, “We thought it would be an attention-grabber, and it has been.” Taking their inspiration from a pool concept in Dubai, the developer contacted a consultant and building team with the expertise required to create such a show-stopper.

The acrylic glass used for the base of the Market Square Sky Pool measures 5.5 inches in thickness. Designed by a firm from Texas, the building was completed in November 2016, and this video subsequently went viral this spring. Sky Pool is being billed as the tallest in Texas, not to mention the only one of its kind in Houston. Containing 33,000 gallons of water, and able to withstand hurricane conditions, it’s a unique addition to this luxury high-rise that’s dropping jaws throughout the city, and now the world!
