The former Walter Buck Wildlife Management Area and the adjacent South Llano River State Park (to which it now belongs) offer fantastic wildlife viewing opportunities for fans of white-tailed deer, bobcats (on rare occasion), and wild turkeys.

Both sections of the South Llano River State Park have feeders and observation blinds for bird watchers, attracting black-throated sparrows, the Verdin, pyrrhuloxia, Bushtit, and canyon towhee. Bobwhite quail, coyotes, and untamed beauty can also be found at these sites, and if you’re looking for some peace, some perfect opportunities for spotting various species, and a chance to see Texas natural loveliness at its best, then this area can accommodate you nicely.

Offering close to 18 miles of biking and hiking trails, 58 serviced campsites, six walk-in tent sites, and five primitive, hike-in campsites, the park has year-round access, with restricted hours from October through March. Also designated as an International Dark Sky Park, it features special stargazing events and opportunities, and makes seeing the stars at night as almost an “otherworldly” experience, when the whole time you’ll be grounded in nature, in the heart of Texas.
