In 2013, Corpus Christi teen Christian Carillo was hit by a car that left the scene of the crime. According to KXAN, Carillo “broke his spine, cracked his skull, and was in a coma for weeks after the crash.”

Now, 19-years-old, Carillo came face-to-face with Eric Acevado, the man who injured him, in a courtroom. Instead of walking past the man and out of the courtroom, Carillo embraced Acevado for a long hug. They exchanged pats on the back and a mutual understanding of how difficult the ordeal has been. Acevedo will spend time in prison along with paying a $10,000 fine.

Carillo’s act of forgiveness shows emotional maturity well beyond his years and can inspire us all to express compassion even when it seems impossible to do so.
