Texas Athletes Looking for Gold in XXIII Olympic Winter Games

In case you haven’t been tuned in, the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics began on Friday, February 9, and there are three Team USA members from Texas competing. There are also three additional Texans competing for other countries – Canada and Nigeria! Here’s the lowdown on who you could and should be watching for.

Houston native Jonathan Garcia is competing in long track speedskating, Sam McGuffie, hailing from Cypress, is competing in bobsledding, and Justin Olsen, from San Antonio, is also competing in bobsledding. This will be the second Olympic Games appearance for long track speedskater Jonathan Garcia. He first competed in the 2014 Sochi Games, finishing 28th in the 1000m event. For Sam McGuffie, this is the first winter Olympics appearance, and for Justin Olsen, it’s the third. He took the gold home in the 2010 games in Vancouver, British Columbia, in Canada.

With respect to Texans appearing on other teams, Olympic ice dancer Kaitlyn Weaver (a Houstonian) was originally skating with a partner out of Dallas who quit to attend college. Following that, she went to Canada in search of another partner. She has since competed on the Canadian Olympic team, find some successes internationally.

As well, former University of Houston students, Seun Adigun and Ngozi Onwumere, are competing on Nigeria’s women’s bobsled team. Their recruitment is part of the effort by the International Olympic Committee to enhance sports in regions that they may not have traditionally competed in. That being said, there could be still more Texas ties we’re unaware of, and viewers should keep an eye out. The Lone Star State is big and has been known to produce some of the world of sports’ top talent.
