Texas Man Trapped in ATM Sends Notes on Receipts for Help

By  |

In an interview with a local NBC affiliate, Corpus Christi Police Lieutenant Chris Hooper identified that on Wednesday, July 12, a contractor became stuck inside an ATM at a local Bank of America when the doorway to the room he was changing a lock for closed. He had left both his access swipe card as well as his cell phone in his truck, and was only able to slip notes to customers through the receipt slot, asking them to help him get out.

Unable to notify either his boss nor the bank staff that he required help, the man started to pass notes to the customers when he saw they were accessing cash from the machine where he was working. One, in particular, read, “Please help. I’m stuck in here and I don’t have my phone. Please call my boss…”

Sounding more like a gag from Candid Camera, some customers ignored the notes altogether, however one did in fact contact police who heard a faint voice coming from inside the ATM. At that point, an officer of the Corpus Christi police department kicked in the door, freeing the man inside, whose name has been withheld.

According to senior officer Richard Olden, “Everyone is OK, but you will never see this in your life, that somebody was stuck in the ATM. It was just crazy.” According to video reports, the unfortunate contractor had been locked in the room for approximately two hours before being freed!
