CBS News was notified that Texas, New York, and Virginia are all possible targets for a terror attack by al Qaeda potentially taking place on Monday, the day before the election. No specific locations were named in relation to the three states.

The sources of this information have not been identified, but the claims are being taken very seriously by U.S. authorities who are researching the credibility of the claims. A senior FBI official gave CBS a sense of reassurance that everything that needs to be done in terms of research and preparation is happening.  They said, “The counterterrorism and homeland security communities remain vigilant and well-postured to defend against attacks here in the United States.  The FBI, working with our federal, state and local counterparts, shares and assesses intelligence on a daily basis and will continue to work closely with law enforcement and intelligence community partners to identify and disrupt any potential threat to public safety.”

As CBS aptly points out, “Intelligence about potential threats always increases during holiday seasons and when big events are approaching.” The tension surrounding Election Day has been mounting for some time. Police officers were already going to be paying close attention to polling locations due to the possibility of lone extremists. The threat of a wider potential terror attack certainly adds to the mental turmoil.
