Vegan Authentic Mexican Restaurant in Pleasant Grove is the Real Deal

By  |

El Palote Panadería in Pleasant Grove, within the city limits of Dallas, Texas, isn’t your ordinary, run-of-the-mill, authentic Mexican restaurant. Not that such delicious cuisine could ever be run-of-the-mill, but the Arias family, who owns the eatery, took their food preparation one step further. In an interview with WFAA, Aaron Arias explained, “Everything we do, we use no animal products whatsoever.”

That’s right, El Palote Panadería is a vegan Mexican restaurant and bakery, offering all of the great classics you’ve come to know and love, and none of the meat, dairy, lard, or eggs that, as a vegan, you would not want to see used in your meal. Vegan diets place emphasis on vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, seeds, and nuts. But this doesn’t mean that one ever has to go without. “We have a full menu of tamales, tacos, flautas, burritos,” said Arias, whose family has created their recipes and menu according to the vegan way of eating, and run the kitchen at the restaurant and bakery.

To ensure authentic taste, Aurelio and Lily Arias have refined textures and flavors to imitate everything that would traditionally be made the non-vegan way. Said their son: “We process our own soy. Meaning we tailor-make the soys to try to fit those traditional meat textures and tastes.” Everything from gorditas to enchiladas is on the menu, for carnivores and vegans alike, and tofu and vegan egg substitutes play a role in preparation. Why this desire to change it up a little, or a lot? Approximately a decade ago, Aurelio became vegan when doctors told him that his heart problems, blood pressure, and high cholesterol almost killed him. Brittney Bearden, a registered dietitian from Texas Health Ben Hogan advised that a plant-based diet could help lower his cholesterol, body weight, and blood pressure, as well as decrease his risk of developing heart disease and type-2 diabetes.
