Texas is the number five wine-producing state in the U.S., and the Texas Hill Country American Viticultural Area is the second largest in the nation. The Hill Country boasts 42 unique wineries, each with its own terroir, personality and winemaking style.

Spanish and Italian varietals, including Tempranillo, Viognier, Sangiovese and Tannat grow well in this area, and the scenic views can’t be beat. Here are our top picks for wineries in The Texas Hill Country.

William Chris Vineyards is a family-owned boutique winery, focusing on high quality, hand crafted wine. They use eco-friendly, low-impact techniques to produce premium 100 percent Texas-sourced wine. Their grape varietals include Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Tannat, Mourvèdre and Trebbiano Toscano.

The tasting room is situated in a century old farmhouse with a new deck, which hosts live music every Saturday. The vineyard, a beautiful oak grove and an 18th century cemetery add to the picturesque surroundings.

Flat Creek Estate sits on 80 acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, with 20 acres of vineyards. The property includes walking paths, a scenic outdoor patio, restaurant and Tuscan-style tasting room. Varietals include Syrah, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Tempranillo, Muscat Canelli, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc and several Portuguese Port varietals.

Flat Creek began as a 5,500 case winery and expanded to a 10,000 case winery in 2009, which produces award-winning, hand-crafted Texas wines.

Becker Vineyards is perhaps the most widely recognized winery on this list. It has been featured on the Fine Living Channel and served at The White House. For over 20 years, the Becker family has produced award-winning Bordeaux, Burgundian, and Rhone-styled wines and is one of the largest contractors of Texas-grown fruit. It is now a 100,000 case per year winery.

The beautiful Becker estate is surrounded by lavender fields and regularly hosts events, tastings and tours. The Lavender Haus Reception Hall, custom cellar and private tasting room are available for receptions and other large group events

The Maxwell family can trace its Texas winemaking roots back to the late 1700s. Owner Jenise Maxwell comes from a family who owned vineyards in Socorro, Texas at that time. The tradition continues with Torre di Pietra, and they are committed to the highest winemaking standards.

The winery recently announced the installation of three Electric Vehicle Charging Stations for patrons use. They include two Tesla Destination Charging Stations (Tesla Wall Connectors / up to 100 amps) that charge the Tesla S in 4 hours and a Universal Charging Station (up to 60 amps) compatible with all electric vehicles.

Pontotoc Vineyard is owned and operated by Carl and Frances Money, who purchased the estate in 2003. Although relatively new to winemaking, the Money Family is a fifth generation Texas farming family. The vineyard sits on a farm originally founded by the German Emigration Company in 1872 and has fertile red sand soil and pink granite outcroppings.

The family purchased turn-of-the-century sandstone buildings in Pontotoc, including what was once the grocery store, hardware store, post office, barber shop and movie theater. They converted the oldest buildings, the grocery and hardware stores, into the Pontotoc Vineyard Weinhalle and Winery.

10. Texas Hills Vineyard – Johnson City

Texas Hills Vineyard is located in the rolling hills of the Texas Hill Country. Owners Gary & Kathy Gilstrap noticed that the hills and soil resemble that of the Tuscan countryside, so they decided to infuse an Italian influence in their wines. Grape varietals include Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, Orange Moscato, Merlot and Syrah.

The winery is an environmentally friendly structure, which was built using rammed-earth technology to create thick walls with cave like insulation properties. The tasting room has a unique, horseshoe-shaped bar and a patio overlooking the vineyard.
