5 Fantastic Things To Do in Schertz, Texas

Schertz, one of the major suburbs of Northeast San Antonio, is a growing community of about 35,000 people. The first settlers came to Schertz in the 1840s, and though it has grown substantially in size and population since that time, Schertz continues celebrate its agricultural and entrepreneurial heritage, while continuing to look towards the future. Aside from the plethora of things to do in nearby San Antonio, there are a number of fun activities for all ages in Schertz itself.

1. Pickrell Park

Schertz is home to ten parks, including nature, baseball, and skate parks. Pickrell Park is the premier location for many of Schertz’ events and festivals. This large park features basketball courts, a swimming pool, picnic tables, barbecue pits, pavilions, and more. Pickrell Park is a great place to spend a sunny Texas afternoon. With its ample parking and quiet, residential location, Pickrell Park is a great place to experience Schertz.

2. Bussey’s Flea Market

Bussey’s Flea Market began with 120 vendor spaces in the fall of 1978. Today, Bussey’s Flea Market has three generations of full time employees, and over 500 vendors. With a its traditional flea market feel, and a little something for everyone, Bussey’s is a great place to hunt for treasures and grab a bite from one of the local food trucks. Parking is only $1.00, and there is no entrance fee. If you can’t pass up a good deal, and enjoy the art of haggling, Bussey’s is a must-see! Bussey’s is just off I-35 in Schertz, keep an eye out for the giant armadillo!

3. Schertz Jubilee

There’s no better time to visit Schertz than the 4th of July! Schertz’ first Jubilee celebration was in 1975 and is remembered as one of South Texas’ largest tributes to freedom. The annual Schertz Jubilee is an Independence Day celebration that takes place in and around Pickrell Park, and features live musical entertainment, a parade with hundreds of participants, a 5K Run, a carnival, contests, food, and fun. The activities close with a fireworks spectacular that goes off rain or shine.

4. Crescent Bend Nature Park

Nestled in the wooded area between FM 1518 and FM 78 in Schertz, Crescent Bend Nature Park is a relatively untouched preserve that lies along Cibolo Creek. The park is subtle in its simplicity, made up of little more than a decomposed gravel walking trail that winds back and forth through the trees. The park is dotted with benches along its trails, and a few picnic tables along the creek bank. It is home to a number of native birds and wildlife species, and is a favorite of bird enthusiasts. The park features a bird blind and feeders, which provide the perfect location for photography and birdwatching.

5. SchertzFest

For the past eight years, community volunteers and city staff have worked together on SchertzFest, an annual fall celebration of the town’s history, honoring the anniversary of its incorporation in 1958. The festivities take place at Pickrell Park, and include a barbecue cook-off, live music, fun contests, family activities, food trucks, and more. This year’s event is slated for September 16 and 17.

No matter the time of year, there is always something to explore in Schertz. Recently named one of the safest cities in Texas, Schertz is a great place to visit and to live!
