At the western door of the Texas Hill Country sits the town of Sonora, a hidden sanctuary of sorts, just waiting to be explored. Whether you’re looking for a road trip to take your cares away, or you’re trying to find the perfect school-year-end trip to celebrate with the family, this West Texas gem at the brink of the Chihuahuan Desert awaits you with open arms. There are caverns to explore, hiking to check off your bucket list, and a Lone Star State history rich in pioneering and ranching. It all makes Sonora the star of your Texas staycation dreams.

Located approximately 15 miles southwest of town are the Caverns of Sonora. A unique experience for those who enjoy spelunking, visitors to this incomparable tourist attraction can anticipate a breathtaking spectacle. The Caverns of Sonora feature guided tours through what can only be described as an amazing show cave. Each room you visit contains awe-inspiring sights you can enjoy on the two-hour Crystal Palace Tour with your guide, or on the four-hour Discovery Challenge Tour—a more challenging experience you can take with an experienced caver, including 50 feet of rappelling into the “Devil’s Pit.”

If you’re soul-searching or simply longing for some way to connect with the past, this tiny Texas map dot holds a number of little amazements. The Old Sonora Ice House Ranch Museum is home to the gun that put an end to the escapades of the infamous William “News” Carver, a member of the Wild Bunch gang led by Butch Cassidy. In addition, it houses a variety of Native American artifacts and implements used by the area’s earliest ranchers. Likewise, the 1889 Miers Home Museum, located on the Courthouse Square, is dedicated to the town’s past, featuring a significant collection of artifacts and local newspaper archives, as well as historic community photographs.
