Frio River Fun in Concan, Texas

The Frio River is the heart and inspiration of Concan in the Texas Hill Country. Water sports, bat tours, wildlife activities, and other community events make Concan a fun destination for adventurous Texans.

Experienced river outfitters, like Josh’s Frio River Outfitter and Happy Hollow Grocery & Outfitters, offer equipment and expertise. Kayaking and tubing are popular activities for river goers. Shuttles at various checkpoints on the river offer regular transportation from the Frio to guest lodging and campgrounds.

Fishing for largemouth bass, yellow catfish, and catfish is ideal on the Frio. Bring your gear, or stock up at the local outfitters. Tours are available, or stake out on your own for a relaxing day to catch dinner for the family!

Concan has a wide variety of lodging to extend a day on the river into an unforgettable vacation. There are campgrounds at local parks, cabins, and rental houses. These range from rustic accommodations to luxurious homes. Concan is a perfect setting for weddings, large events, family trips and weekends away for couples. Local venues can accommodate a variety of occasions.  Whether you are on a family friendly getaway, a romantic getaway or a large gathering; there is a perfect location for you!

Garner State Park is popular for hikers and campers in the area. Nightly dances held during peak camping seasons attract locals as well as vacationers. There are many amenities at Garner; cabins, screened shelters, a gift shop, and the popular Garner Grill. There is also a miniature golf course and areas for picnics, cycling, and watersports. Children can get involved in the Ranger programs for educational fun during their stay.

Other parks close to Concan include Kickapoo Caverns and Lost Maples State Park. These parks are known for beautiful caves, hiking, scenic views, and wildlife study.

The Frio River area in Concan is an excellent habitat for birdwatching. Diverse vegetation and wildlife contribute to the positive environment for local bird species. Photographers, as well as birders, are drawn to the area for the wide variety of birds. Friofun.com claims, “the Black Capped Vireo, Green Kingfisher, American Kestrel, Zonetail Hawk, Summer Taniger, Merlin, Gold Cheek Warbler, Red Crossbill and many more species are attracted to our hills.”

Another species attracted to the Hill Country are bats. Texas is home to over thirty species of bats, with Mexican free-tailed bats being the state’s official flying mammal! Bat tours are popular in Concan. There are ten to twelve million bats that make their flights in the Frio Bat Caves. The best time to see these bats are in the spring and summer, with August providing the best viewing opportunities.

5. Take a Break from the River with Golf and Horses

Diversify your Concan trip with a round of golf at The Golf Club of Texas. Panoramic views on a championship course are the perfect addition to your Frio vacation. The Bechtol-Russell designed course is as beautiful as it is challenging. Bring your clubs and swing away at this stunning course.

Horseback riding is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon off of the water. Elm Creek Stables is close to Garner State Park and a wonderful experience for all riders. Elm Creek is family friendly, with expert guides and gentle horses. The farm is a bonus for children, there are other animals to pet and feed, and excellent photo opportunities. Affordable rides, beautiful views, and shady trails are a great combination for adding a horseback ride to your Concan vacation.
