Jezebel Sauce Will Seduce Your Taste Buds! A Classic Southern Dish

Imagine having such an effect on people that you are remembered thousands of years later and they named a sauce after you! Considered a Southern staple, Jezebel sauce packs a biblical punch like no other. With evidence of use in the 1950s along the United States’ Gulf Coast, in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, and Kansas too, Jezebel sauce has been served over cream cheese with crackers, alongside roasted carnivorous dinners, atop a juicy burger (even meatless!), and as a dip for wings. After World War II, housewives were enamored with “instant” ingredients, which made this combination popular in the age of quick and simple party snacks that used only boxed, jarred, or canned goods.

Jezebel’s name has become a jargon term for a seductive woman. She was a 9th century B.C. Phoenician princess. The name association with sexual promiscuity is a more modern tie and the influence lives on; searching for the term ‘jezebel’ resulted in 257 lyrics. It is generally accepted the name of the sauce comes from the blending of sweet with pungent ingredients.

Variations abound for this recipe, so google and trust your gut on preference. Some options include adding or swapping in creole mustard, jalapeños, minced ginger, and apricot preserves. Serving suggestions for Jezebel sauce include: make a day in advance to get the best flavor and serve at room temperature by taking it out of the refrigerator at least 4 hours prior to serving.
