Kerr County Roller Derby Making a Difference in the Hill Country

Kerr County Roller Derby is a tiny little roller derby league that is making a big splash in the Hill Country. These ladies might look like “toughies” but, on the inside, they’re all heart. Started in 2012, the league has a goal to share the sport of roller derby while empowering women and giving back to their community.

The league is skater-run, meaning that they do all of the setting up and tearing down for each bout. These ladies are not only working up a sweat in the rink, but also in the community. They team up with a cause or charitable group for each bout and donate the proceeds from the bout to the organization. In the past, they’ve helped Combat Marine Outdoors, Hill Country Cares, CASA, Kids’ Advocacy Place, Art 2 Heart, Little Grass Ranch, Freeman Fritts Animal Shelter, The Big Fix, and a few others.

On Saturday, August 12, Kerr County Roller Derby is teaming up with Kerrville Leo’s Club (a service group for teens) to raise money for Blessings in a Backpack, an organization that sends food home with children who rely almost exclusively on the school to feed them. These children struggle on weekends and school breaks to stay fed, and Blessings in a Backpack is there to help.

According to Blessings in a Backpack, currently, 1 in 5 school-aged children faces “food insecurity,” (More simply put: They don’t have enough to eat on a regular basis.) Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry. As a leader in the movement to end childhood hunger, Blessings strives to ensure children don’t go hungry on the weekends by empowering individuals and communities to take action.

So, plan to attend this fun event and support these roller derby ladies who are working hard to make a difference in their community. Enjoy a rousing evening of good-natured, smack-talking (and yes, maybe a little pushing and shoving, too), roller derby entertainment, and help support a worthy cause in our communities. Visit the Kerr County Roller Derby Facebook page for more information on this and future events.
