With an upcoming new CD release scheduled for October of this year, Lee Ann Womack is capturing the hearts of fans as one of the country music industry’s more distinctive female voices, and keeping them tuned into a classic sound where today’s version of the genre is often lacking.
Born and raised in Jacksonville, Texas, she took an interest in country music at a young age. After high school graduation, she went on to Levelland to attend South Plains Junior College, which was offering country music degrees – one of the first to do so in the entire United States.
Having absorbed many of the sounds of classic country music through her father’s influence, who was a disc jockey back in Jacksonville, she got involved with a band in college and chose to finish her education in Nashville, Tennessee, attending Belmont University. Her path to a solid career in country music came through a songwriting deal which, in turn, led to a recording contract. She released her self-titled debut album in 1997 and earned a hit with “The Fool,” winning Top New Female Vocalist at the ACMs as well as Top Artist of the Year with Billboard. Her follow-up album earned an even bigger commercial following with the release of “A Little Past Little Rock” and “I’ll Think of a Reason Later.”
