As a celebrity, impressions of Matthew McConaughey are actually a dime-a-dozen. He has become one of the most impersonated stars of late, including being imitated by fellow celebrities like Matt Damon and Jim Carrey. Yet he maintains a humbleness about him. He generally keeps to himself about his family life. He only recently actively joined social media with an Instagram account of his own on his 50th birthday.

After a movie he starred in back in 2009 didn’t do so well at the box office, McConaughey took some time away from Hollywood right here in Texas to reevaluate what direction his career would take. Under the impression that he was typecast for rom-coms, he looked for roles with more meaning, even if they meant less visibility and less money. His next seven movie choices were indie films. The results captured the attention of not only fans but also his counterparts, leading to use of the term “McConaissance” to label his critically acclaimed choices. The Lincoln Lawyer and Dallas Buyer’s Club were among them.

Prior to this, he was a visiting professor there through the Radio-Television-Film program. In an interview with the school paper, he noted, “It’s the class I wish I would have had when I was in film school. Working in the classroom with these students gives me a chance to prepare them.”

In recent days, McConaughey has taken to social media in video form, sharing words of inspiration for those who will listen pertaining to humanity’s response to the COVID-19 and coronavirus pandemic. His first video post identified his desire for all of us to “take care of ourselves and each other…” as he proceeded to remind people how strong we are collectively, given the opportunity. In a second video post, he acknowledged the difficulties we find ourselves dealing with at this time, and he asked viewers to stay home and, to the best of their ability, be self-reliant and take care of their families.
