For many generations, Froberg’s Farm in Alvin, Texas, has been the place to go for pick-your-own strawberries. With over 100 acres of farmland, 30 of which are planted with premium, juicy strawberries, harvesting will happen on the farm throughout the entire spring. Before the season ends, over 150,000 visitors will have enjoyed the opportunity to pick their own berries—a fun activity that started here almost by accident.

Alfred Froberg Jr. explained to alvinsun.net, “When grandpa started, they were all picked, taken down to Alvin and shipped by rail to Chicago. When World War II came, he lost all his help so he had to come up with something else.” The new idea was to open the farm for others to pick their own strawberries. After the first day, the farmer went home and said he’d never need to ship another berry.

Since then, a trip to Froberg’s Farm in Alvin to pick your own strawberries has become a tradition for many a family. Visitors purchase the reusable buckets for $1.25 each and make use of them on every return to the farm. When the bucket is full, it gets weighed at the rate of $3 per pound. To keep up with the strawberry demand, the farm spends more than six months of each year planting, growing, and yes, picking strawberries.

Although picking your own strawberries is the prime attraction at Froberg’s, it’s just one of many now offered since the farm has made the shift toward agri-tourism. Now, children can participate in a number of outdoor activities and take hayrides during their visit. The addition of blackberries and blueberries will also enhance the you-pick experience. Plus, their market features fresh, wholesome produce and goods, including pies, tarts, peanut brittle, and cookies, among other tasty treats! “People just want something to do where they can come outside,” Froberg explained to alvinsun.net. Froberg’s Farm is located at 3601 West Hwy. 6, in Alvin. You can find them online here, or visit their Facebook page for more details.
