The intensive hailstorms that have pummeled the San Antonio region over the past few month has left behind a record-breaking amount of damages.

According to the Insurance Council of Texas, the storms have left behind $2 billion worth of hail damage, which is the most in recorded U.S. history. On top of that, it’s become the costliest storm in Texas history, with cumulative losses of around $1.36 billion.

KSAT reports that this enormous amount of damage has wrecked havoc on the systems used to help insured citizens get payment and repairs.

“The insurance companies are lumping all of these together as one catastrophe, but you can’t call it one storm,” Mark Hanna, spokesman for the Insurance Council of Texas, explained.  “We’re basically a war zone right now, just trying to handle all the claims.”

The area has also seen a rise in scam artists, who are using the storm’s aftermath to profit from fake hail damage. Unaccredited contractors are also attempting to do shoddy work or stealing money upfront for uncompleted repairs. Hanna recommends intensely researching all contractors and their accreditations before hiring them for any repair work.
