Scenic Texas Highways Beautification Project Well Underway

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the Texas Hill Country is the picturesque view of the Texas highways filled with Texas Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrushes, and other notable Texas Wildflowers that blanket the Texas Hill Country come every spring. Soc Gonzalez enjoys the Texas wildflowers and was moved to help improve the Texas Hill Country highways. Soc noticed “that the landscape at the 281/TX71 intersection was present and had great potential for being a focal point for the Texas Hill Country community and for all who travel the roadways.” His “Just Do It” mindset was the motivation behind the inspiration to launch this awe-inspiring project.”

The intersection welcomes thousands of visitors to Burnet County-US 281 and Texas 71 in Marble Falls. Inspired, Soc began the Citizens for Scenic Texas Highways which then partnered with Texas Department of Transportation Adopt a Highway Program. The site has been called the Gateway to the Hill Country, Highland Lakes Region as pictured below.

This area has been deemed as a “welcome mat” to seasonal visitors, hailing from Texas and beyond.

Mills services of Kingsland are donating nearly $10,000 in professional arborists services for phase one of the project. Phase two includes planting 56 acres of grassy medians during wildflower planting season in 2017 and 2018. An excess of $62,000 worth of native annuals and perennials will be planted to bloom from spring through early summer. Governor Abbott has sent Soc a personal letter of commendation for their efforts. Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of president Lyndon B. Johnson welcomed volunteers of the Citizens for Scenic Texas Highways to her Central Texas Home recently as pictured.

It is only fitting that The Trademarked Legacy Lady Bird Wildflower Mix has been selected for this project. The seed mix includes the following: Texas Bluebonnet, Indian Blanket, Black-Eyed Susan, Winecup, Purple Coneflower, Lemon Mint, Prairie Verbena, Indian Paintbrush, Pink Evening Primrose, and Plains Coreopsis.
