With the holidays behind us, many people are beginning to think about plans for Spring Break. While many families like to spend their Spring Break at the beach – and Texas certainly has good options for beach lovers – families looking to head west instead of south will be excited to know that the Caverns of Sonora is an impressive family destination, that offers natural beauty, adventure, and fun – all within a day’s drive of most Texas cities.

Located Halfway Between San Antonio and Big Bend

Located just 15 miles southwest of Sonora sits the Caverns of Sonora. These caverns are internationally recognized as being one of the most beautiful show caves on the planet. The Caverns of Sonora marks the halfway point between San Antonio and Big Bend National Park, so a spectacular road trip awaits, no matter what part of Texas (or beyond) you’re traveling from.

Spend your time at the Caverns doing a guided tour, encompassing two miles of crystal-covered cave passages and learn about the history of the area – a history that includes the discovery of this massive cave system around the turn of the 20th century, when a small hole in the ground (that a racoon used to escape a dog) was found to be so much more than just a 20 inch hole in the ground. Sluice for gems, hike the nature trails and enjoy the best weather that the state has to offer. Camping is available nearby with both primitive and RV areas offered. If you’re more of a hotel kind of person, there are hotel and resort accommodations available in the Sonora area.

While the Caverns of Sonora is a popular stopping off point for folks heading to the Big Bend region of Texas and beyond, there are many attractions to be enjoyed near the caverns as well. Fort McKavett State Historical Site is only an hour from the caverns and consists of the remains of a 150-year-old Texas fort that is now considered to be one of the best preserved and most intact examples of a Texas Indian Wars (1850–1875) military post. Take in the spectacular Hill Country vistas and experience the history of early Texas life through the real stories of the infantrymen, Buffalo Soldiers, women, and children who lived at what Gen. William T. Sherman once described as “the prettiest post in Texas.
