The Riverwalk in San Antonio (a.k.a. Paseo del Río) is loaded with shopping, food, beverages, history, and even romance. From one vantage point, there are numerous restaurants, bars, and hotels along the river, lending it the modern appeal that it enjoys today. From another, are the historical remains of the Alamo: the mission location for the epic 13-day battle in 1836 that grounds us and serves as a reminder of our state’s past. A popular tourist destination, the Riverwalk is a gem to not only San Antonio, but to the Texas Hill Country and the state as a whole. As a result, it can often become crowded on weekends, but it’s worth the visit no matter what day of the week you happen to be there. So, here are some ideas beforehand for where you should go and what you should expect, aside from great service, friendly atmosphere, and excellent scenery.

Take a Wine, Beer, or Sweet Concoction to Go

Alcohol is allowed while walking the Riverwalk (it’s just not allowed above, on the street.) A visit to the Bier Garten, which is located just east of the Alamo, will get you started with an afternoon beverage of your choice, in order to sip and stroll.

Take a Riverboat Tour

To help you get a better handle on just what exactly the Riverwalk includes or entails, take a guided tour in a riverboat. They travel the river through most of the Riverwalk with numerous stops/locations here and there along the way, for you to purchase tickets. Their usual hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and they give you a great perspective of the area, other than simply strolling along (which is also quite beautiful).

Bring Your Appetite

Perhaps plan a full day, if not more, of your trip to discover the great dining experiences that the Riverwalk can offer. Tapas to main dishes, cool and hot drinks (depending on your tastes), and an atmosphere that can’t be beat. There are outdoor patios, of course, to enhance your dining experience and take advantage of the location, as well as some mid-to-high-end establishments to partake of if you’re looking to impress a loved one or simply want a great meal in a fantastic atmosphere.
