Around 2:00 a.m. on November 30, South Carolinian Alex Bowen decided to take a trip to the Waffle House since he was having a hard time falling asleep and had a hankering for a greasy meal. But once he got to the restaurant, he saw that the employee on duty wasn’t having the same problem as he was. They were fast asleep with their head down on the counter. Since they looked so peaceful, Bowen didn’t have the heart to wake them. So he decided to rustle up his own meal in the Waffle House kitchen, and his Facebook post and accompanying photos quickly went viral with 4.6 thousand reactions and over 4,700 shares.

News stations across the United States picked up the story including KSAT who writes that the next day, Bowen returned to the Waffle House to pay for the meal he made himself – “…a double Texas bacon cheesesteak with extra pickles.”

Bowen also states that he did look around the whole restaurant, inside and out, and he sat down and waited for a few minutes before he walked behind the counter to start making his own meal. He also admits to having a bit of liquid courage backing his decision.
