George Jones’ legendary producer Billy Sherrill sat down one day in Nashville during the mid-80s and wondered what was next for his country music star.

Having cleaned up his act a couple years prior after a long battle with drugs and alcohol, Jones was enjoying a resurgence and a run of success during an era of cable television that drew audiences to The Nashville Network still hankering for that raw, classic country talent.

When country music songwriter Trey Seals stepped into Sherrill’s office that day, George Jones claimed, “He saved the day for us.” The song contained a chorus that wondered what would happen when the likes of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty were gone. It sang of their irreplaceability and status as then-living legends.

The video for the song, which contains a cameo by Sherrill as a bus driver, went on to win a CMA award for Video of the Year and the rest is history.
