Bored Panda highlighted the work of Japanese artist Masayoshi Matsumoto two years ago when he first came on to the art scene, but now that his work has grown, more outlets are taking a closer look at Matsumoto’s unique art style.

“I started making these seven years ago, I was really inspired by wildlife pictures and wanted to see if I could create realistic animals of my own,” he told Metro.

Matsumoto creates surprisingly intricate animals from balloons with the same kind of long, skinny balloons that clowns use at children’s birthday parties. But his work doesn’t quite look like a quickly contorted dog or sword you’d see at a carnival. By taking colored balloons that match the creature he’s trying to make, Matsumoto somehow spins and folds the latex into anything from a phoenix to a hermit crab.

Without using any glue or any other supplements to create the balloon sculptures, 26-year-old Matsumoto is able to present his fans who follow his Twitter or Tumblr with new creations. Lately, he’s been focusing on insects. Who knew that a cicada larva could look so impressive in balloon animal form? And how is he able to make a louse look almost beautiful? His work is truly mind-boggling.
