A huge kinetic sculpture is dazzling downtown Los Angeles until August 11th. This playful and captivating installation is called “Liquid Shard.” It’s set up in Pershing Square as an undulating mass of holographic streamers that move effortlessly with the wind.

The piece was dreamt up by a group called Poetic Kinetics with Patrick Shearn as their project leader. He enlisted the help of students from AA Visiting School Los Angeles to help fabricate and hang the 10-day design project.

AA Visiting School Los Angele documented the process of attaching the materials to a net and then lifting the netting up 10-stories on one side to reach the nearby purple belltower. The other end of the piece was tethered to a corner of the park.

Poetic Kinetics are known for their huge interactive sculptures and festive installations like “Caterpillar’s Longing,” which was a huge butterfly that attended the Coachella music festival. But “Liquid Shard” has opened up their work to a new audience who might just be passing through the downtown area.

The piece looks differently throughout the day, and of course, many people find the piece to be very Instagram-worthy.
