What’s red, gooey, and record-breaking? The Pasadena Strawberry Festival’s famous strawberry shortcake, of course! ABC 13 writes that this special dessert measures “over 2,100 square feet and weighs 10,000 pounds.” It takes two days to prepare the cake, and set-up begins at 5 a.m. on the day of the festival where families will stream inside the Pasadena Fairgrounds to grab a heaping slice of the colorful cake.

According to the Strawberry Festival website, the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Strawberry Shortcake was officially set in 2014 with a beautiful display made by Kroger. Now, “The cake is reproduced each year, unveiled and cut during the festival’s opening ceremony on Friday at 5 p.m.” A time-lapse video of its creation can be seen on YouTube, showing that it takes many gloved hands covered in red goo to build the massive treat.

Of course, the cake isn’t the only thing worth gawking at during the Strawberry Festival. There’s live music, a parade, vendors, rides and a mud volleyball tournament which Chron.com describes as “held in a dank pit of water, where shoes, car keys and diamond engagement rings are often lost.” With these eclectic forms of entertainment and an appreciation of strawberries, the Pasadena festival has been going strong since 1967!
