Several I-35 Rock Throwing Cases over Weekend Lead to 5 Injuries

By  |

Over the weekend, 13 new rock throwing cases surfaced on I-35 after a lull in incidents, bringing the total number of cases to over 70.

As KXAN reported, the incidents were scattered throughout the weekend, with one on Friday, three on Saturday, and nine on Sunday at various times throughout the day. Of the incidents, two people went to the hospital with serious injuries on Saturday, and three additional people were injured. One Sunday driver got glass in their eyes from the shattered windshield, but refused treatment.

The locations weren’t centralized in one location, and “while most of the cases were long the stretch of the lower and upper deck of I-35, the cases spanned from Slaughter Lane all the way up to Rundberg Lane.”

In fact, on Saturday night, a Reddit user posted in the /r/Austin thread online to warn others after the driver swerved and barely missed a rock. Other users posted that they, too, missed rocks, which means that whoever is trying to cause damage is aiming for a lot more than they are making contact with.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo told KXAN that it’s only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed in the act. Since 2014, “the Austin Police Department have investigated 70 rock throwing cases.” There is a $10,000 reward on any information leading to arrest and conviction that the public can provide, and if you are a victim of a rock-throwing incident, immediately call 9-1-1 and do not handle it yourself.
