Cora’s 471 Grill in Castroville, Texas is traditionally known for “The Best Nachos in Texas.” But, on April 18, 2016, nachos were far from the minds of 16 karaoke contestants who showed up to help raise money for the 2nd Annual Relay for Life Karaoke Contest. Oh, and of course they also showed up to compete.

Though the contestants ranged in age and style, the winner of the competition was 13 year old Kendra Smitch. She performed “Stitches” by Shawn Mendez, and “Titanium” by David Guetta, ft. Sia. Jaws dropped at her mature voice, wide range, and perfect runs.

On the judges’ panel sat Gabe Garcia, Cassandra Salinas, and Jeremy Richards. All three are successful local vocalists. If you will recall, Gabe Garcia was the 1st runner-up in the 2008 season of NBC’s “Nashville Star”.

Many singers began their performances with emotional dedications to family members that have battled cancer. Ken Pear, a local coach, fought back tears as he gave a heart-felt plea to young people to cover up and beware of the sun’s impact on your skin. He then showed a white-spotted arm and said, “All of these spots are from having cancer burned off.”

The mood dramatically lightened when all three judges were called to perform “Let It Go,” from Frozen while a bucket was passed around to collect more money for the cause.

Jeremy Richards also entertained the crowd with his comedic “amateur celebrity auctioneering” helping to raise $850 of the total. Between the karaoke contest, auction, and other donations, the Purple Panther’s Relay for Life team helped raise a total $1350. All of the proceeds are to benefit the American Cancer Association.
