4 Lives Lost and Dozens Injured After 4 Tornadoes Touch Down in Canton, Eustace, and Caney City

After the National Weather Service reported four tornadoes moving through parts of Van Zandt, Rains, and Henderson counties on Saturday evening, authorities have identified that at least four people have lost their lives and dozens more were injured. The series of tornadoes left in their wake a trail of damage across the three counties located east of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and the Mayor of Canton, Lou Ann Everett, has cautioned that the death toll could rise after search teams are able to sort through the extensive wreckage which includes damaged or destroyed homes and overturned vehicles.

Mayor Everett has identified that 49 tornado-related injuries have been reported, including 16 from a triage center at Canton High School. In an interview with NBC-DFW, she further noted that these storms which began late Saturday afternoon have left “heartbreaking” and “devastating” destruction in a swath roughly 35 miles in length and 15 miles in width. Searches are now underway in a coordinated door-to-door effort, including teams required for support with downed power lines and a number of gas leaks, and Canton officials have asked that in the interim, potential volunteers delay in attending on the scene until the full extent of the damage and danger can be assessed. At that time, they will notify the public when additional assistance will be required.

A spokesperson for the East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System has advised NBC that so far, 56 people have been treated at hospitals in Tyler, Athens, and Cedar Creek Lake, including two in critical condition. Grant Johnston, Meteorologist with NBC 5 was on the scene in the Texas Thunder Truck when the tornado touched down in Canton, sharing his footage and identifying that dozens of cars had been overturned along Interstate 20 just east of the city.
