The holiday season is here… and shoppers are frantically searching for those last minute gifts or stocking fillers! San Antonio has an abundance of shopping choices. In the midst of all the others, five are special. In these shops one can find many treasures. Some odd, some beautiful, some functional, some frivolous, some fun – but all are one-of-a-kind.

1. Ten Thousand Villages

Ten Thousand Villages carries a large variety of jewelry, home décor items, kitchenware, accessories and art. The items are handmade by aritists in countries such as Latin America and Africa. The objects are as diverse as the hands that make them. For example, one great find is the set of three-legged pig salt and pepper shakers from Chile. Not only are they cute, they bring good luck. The range of nativity scenes is significant. From Chile to Bangladesh, made of metal or straw; they have it all. All the items are labeled with the country of origin and most include a photo and a story about the item. These are gifts that will live one because the purchase helps sustain an artist in another country.

2. Melissa Guerra – Latin Kitchen Market

Melissa Guerra touts itself as a “Latin kitchen market”, but it is so much more than that. In addition to kitchenware, drinkware, tableware, the store also carries hard to find food ingredients and Melissa Guerra’s own flavored coffees. The etched glassware pieces are works of art. Love the taste of Mexican hot chocolate? This is the place to buy the authentic chocolate flavored with cinnamon and sugar. Better yet! Serve it in lucha libre enamel cups!
