Texas Conjoined Twins Successfully Separated After 15-Hour Surgery
Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas has separated 10-month old conjoined sisters, Ximena and Scarlett Hernandez-Torres. The Texas conjoined twins who shared a bladder were successfully separated after a 15-hour long surgery.
Their father Raul Torres tells KGNS News before the surgery, “I’ve been nervous. I’ve been praying a lot, every single day, even at work. I think about them, and I think about the surgery. Sometimes I can’t even sleep.”
A few days before the surgery, the parents had the girls baptized by a Catholic priest at the hospital. Torres tells KGNS that the baptism made him feel a little bit better about sending his daughters into the risky surgery.
According to head doctor, Dr. Haroon Patel, the medical team and specialists prepared many months for the surgery. The medical team included some 45 people. While the girls will have to undergo more surgeries in the near future, their recovery and outlook for a normal life are positive.
The two girls are actually part of a set of triplets. Their identical sister, Catlina, was born with no major health issues and is doing well.
